A nice hike and still relatively close to DFW.
Cross Timbers Trail - 12/30/2006  [View Log Page]
Rating: 4stars Difficulty: 3stars Solitude: 3stars
Distance: 10.00 Miles Duration: 5 minutes
A nice trail that is more rural and rugged than most DFW area trails. It is not totally natural, as the trail goes through some marinas and by other developed sites, but it is still a good hike. Some ups and downs so that you can get some more realistic training for hiking more wilderness trails elsewhere. I did have some problems at one section following the trail, as it appears that a biking trail and the hiking trail kept criss-crossing and confusing me. Still, a good place to warm-up for future hikes out west.
Not one of my favorites
OP Schnabel Park - 4/30/2005  [View Log Page]
Rating: 2stars Difficulty: 2stars Solitude: 1star
Distance: 5.00 Miles Duration: N/A
Living in San Antonio I've been trying to find some favorite hiking spots. O P Schnabel is NOT one of them. The park was crowded, noisy and not at all challenging. If somebody is looking for aerobic excercise, you'd be better off hiking the streets around your house.
Not difficult at all
Guadalupe River State Park - 4/4/2005  [View Log Page]
Rating: 3stars Difficulty: 1star Solitude: 4stars
Distance: 6.00 Miles Duration: N/A
This is a typical state park with very easy trails. On the day I went, I didn't meet anyone else on the trails but there were some people in the parking lot unloading their horses (it's a multi-use trail). On weekends and holidays the park is very crowded. The trails are very flat, level, and easy to walk.
Wasn't worth the time to get there
Bamberger Nature Park - 3/30/2005  [View Log Page]
Rating: 1point5stars Difficulty: 1star Solitude: 1star
Distance: 2.50 Miles Duration: N/A
This park is best suited for the truly inexperienced hiker (someone who can't chew gum and walk at the same time.) If all you want to do is pretend you're "in the wilderness" then Bamberger is OK. Otherwise, it's a disappointment.
A gentle learning experience
Cibolo Nature Center - 3/23/2005  [View Log Page]
Rating: 3stars Difficulty: 1star Solitude: 1point5stars
Distance: 6.00 Miles Duration: N/A
The Nature Center is a unique experience in that it's not really a hiking challenge but a learning experience. In just a few miles you can visit four distinct eco-systems in the same park. On the day I went the weather was cool and cloudy making for a very enjoyable time. I think there was a local school bus or two with quite a few children. This detracted from the peace and solitude but who am I to deny children the opportunity to learn about the environment and how to protect it?? I'll be returning to the Center in the summer, then again in the fall and winter just to see the changes in flora and fauna. It's also just a few short miles down the road (Hwy 46) from the Honey Creek Preserve and Guadalupe River State Park.
