This is the loop that services the backpacking camping area. It does not have much shade, so head out early in the morning if you are hiking it in August like I did. The trail features pretty classic hill country terrain, and plenty of solitude.. its Quiet! Colorado bend has opened nearly 35 miles of trails now and an overnight backpacking trip starting and ending at the spicewood springs trail would be fun.. you can now loop the entire park for a great trip!
go for it!
Multi use but fun!

Slaughter is definitely multi use, on Sunday I encountered sever Mountain bikes and 3 groups of horses. It was Mid morning when everyone was out. That being said, this is a great short Central texas hike. there are some fun interpretive markers along they way that describe some of the history and area and the trail is in great shape.
The trail also does not continually bend back on itself like some mountain bike trails and that " flow" style of trail can get tedious when hiking..
Overall this is totally worth checking out.. its about 60-40 Shade to sun.. so be prepared for a warmer hike in Summer.
Have fun!

One of Austin's crown Jewels..
I parked a car at the Zilker park trail head and got a shuttle to the top of Scottish woods and the hill of life. Then Walked the trail in one direction. about 8miles. Much of it is the green tunnel like hike in the woods, but it opens to wonder views of Barton creek and notorious swimming holes like Sculpture falls during the hike. There are some social trails along the way that can make it a little confusing, but if you keep the creek close its almost a no brainer. In deep summer go early in the morning, not only for nicer temp's but a bit more solitude possibly.
Have fun!

The Goodwater trail is connected all the way around the lake. 27 total miles approximately.
I completed the loop in an overnighter with about 5 other folks from the Austin hiking meet up group. Excellent overnight backpacking trip. We left from Jim hogg and camped at Sawyer.. then completed the loop in the morning.
A couple of things.. you can fill water at the overlook and entrance station, so don't over carry on the first day..you can also fill water at Camp Tejas on day 2 which is an easy hike after the camp out.. The trail is overall Flat, but its on limestone nearly the whole way and can create some significant foot pain so wear sturdy shoes and walk carefully..
This is an excellent long walk close to Austin.
