I strongly support the "Leave No Trace Behind" ethic. As hikers venture into the wilderness, it is important to only take photographs and leave only footprints. This is an example of what NOT to do! Feel free to share other violations of the ethic, too, to help improve awareness and compliance. |
Happy Trails!

Here's the video, embedded. Morons. Their excuse about the rock being a safety hazard is a weak attempt to rationalize what seems to be a clear case of vandalism, by "adults" who should know better. If there was any justice that rock would have fallen on slob who dislodged it. |

A similar fate was shared by Balanced Rock here in the Hill Country. Some idiot dynamited the thing off its perch. |

I was disgusted during a recent visit to Garner State Park to see a lot of graffiti spray painted on the rocks of Old Baldy. Also, at Pedernales Falls State Park, it is disappointing to see all the graffiti etched into the rock walls along many of the dry water channels. Newsflash: No one except these egotistical vandals cares who they are, who loves who, or the fact that they were ever there! In 2008, I toured the Caverns Of Sonora a few years ago. It used to be famous for their unique "butterfly" formation, but we were informed by the tour guide that some idiot broke off one of the wings and stole it. More info here... |

Now this pisses me off! The $250 fine is a joke. They need to make it MUCH higher and only allow these idiots to go home after they've totally removed it... with a toothbrush. |

90 days is a joke. Stronger deterrents are needed for cases like this. |

I remember this TV commercial when I was a kid. Anyone else remember it? Wish they would run it again (and again... and again...) |

They would probably catch flack today for running a commercial like that complaining about stereotypes and whatnot. The fact is I vividly remember that commercial as a kid and it had a big impact on me. |

If you love someone, great, go buy a Hallmark card. Don't do this. |

This is sad. People are going to ruin what little bit we have. I hiked the LSHT this weekend and I parked at TH#11 Iron Ore. It was a complete disaster with trash laying everywhere. It looked like someone has ripped open 5 trash bags and spread it out. If I would have had some trash bags I would have cleaned it up. I have seen other places I really enjoy get closed down due to litter. I really hope this isnt the case with the LSHT.

Hey Nick,
I hear you. I not only make it a point to pack out what I pack in, but I often pick up other peoples' trash, too. Sometimes, though, you can only do so much.
It is sad when people don't uphold the environmental ethic. Enjoy it, just don't destroy it.
I'm glad you got out on the LSHT and, trash aside, I hope you had a nice hike. |
Happy Trails!

Definitely had a nice hike. That's a really nice area of the trial. I am heading back out this weekend. About to leave in a few hours once I get finished up at work. I made reservations at the Double Lake Recreation Area and plan to do some day hikes and return to DLRA for sleepy time. This weather is going to be perfect.
I packed some extra trash bags so we will clean up what we can.

Very cool. There is a LSHT volunteer organization that does trail maintenance, but I am sure they will appreciate any help you can lend. Have a good hike. It may be a good idea to wear an orange vest as a safety precaution. "Hunter orange" will make you more visible in the woods so no one mistakes you for an animal. If you don't have one, you can usually find a basic orange vest at the dollar store. Enjoy Double Lake, too. They have some nice spots and you can rent canoes to get out on the lake. Last time I was there (earlier this spring), the water level was a little low, but hopefully the rains we've been getting have raised it back up. | Reason: Added where to find orange vests for a low price. |
