We all enjoy the many benefits that hiking in the great outdoors provides, but it's helpful to remember that there are risks, too. Nature is indifferent and must be respected. When we hike in the wilderness, it is not a zoo or a scripted reality show.

Prior planning and preparation can go a long ways in mitigating many of the risks, yet the unexpected can always occur. The intent of this post is not to scare, but to remind people and to educate those with little experience.

Before you hit the trail, be aware and prepared!

And, on road walks, watch out for automobiles.

This is sad. A man walking (while dribbling a soccer ball) from Seattle to Sao Paulo (10,000 miles) to see the 2014 World Cup was hit from behind and killed by an automobile in Lincoln City, Oregon, just 14 days into his trip.

OK, that last example was a little off-topic since he wasn't a hiker, but a homeless hitchhiker, but this example shows how having fun can quickly turn into an emergency:

This example is a little disconcerting. It underscores the importance of acclimating to altitude and how the failure to do so can be fatal, even if you're fit:

This one is pretty gruesome and recent. Apparently, a female hiker in France slipped and fell to her death, and then was eaten.

Add to the list spider bites.

Someone I know was recently bitten by a brown recluse spider. Black widow spiders are also a danger.

Here's a morbidly entertaining list of the worst ways to die in the wild. ;)

This one is weird, and creepy. Be careful of drowning in your car an hour after being rescued on a hiking trail.

Now we need to think about undetonated WWII bombs on the trail? It's a wonder that we all don't just stay home!

Also, beware of falling off narrow mountainous ridges and cliffs. Stories here, here, here, here, here, here and here.
