This couldn't have been a more perfect day to hike. Blue sky clear & cool. I started off thinking this would be just another walk through the pine forest and it kind of was but with a little bit of hill country thrown in. The trail was good while walking along the creek beds. There are ponds where the Houston Toad resides where we saw and heard the toads, and one of the ponds loaded with eggs. After leaving that area the walk did get monotanous. What made it good was, we didn't see anyone until a mile to the end , and he was going the opposite direction.
If you're there at Bastrop, take the hike. McKinney Roughs is about 8-10 miles up the road and it's a better hike. You can cool your feet in the Colorado.
