Finishing up San Gabriel Trail Mapping

Coppertone and I completed two separate sections of the trail today to complete our mapping of the entirety of the trail.  Despite hitting the trail on two opposite ends we still ran into a park employee on a cart who must have wondered how we managed to get to both sides of the trail so quickly.

The track file here includes both the sections hiked today as well as those hiked back in May.

Started off at Booty's Road Park and headed towards Georgetown, did the loop around San Gabriel Park and doubled back to the car.  Coppertone got a new pedometer and is now competing against others at work, so she was keen on getting some mileage in, even if she was breaking in new footwear.

We noted a number of large snails high up on mileage posts or street lights.  I'm not sure why they seem inclined to make that much of an effort.

The partly cloudy skies helped hold down the temperatures.  We were thankful for that.

Finishing out at 10 miles just feet from our car we could not have planned the distance any better!

Decided that we'd come back to do the remainder of the trail to Overlook Park on a different day.  We also need to come back and map the South San Gabriel River Trail segment.

Took the West Hike from the Blue Hole

Just behind the restrooms, I took a hike that ran along the side of much of Scenic Drive.  It does not appear to be the same hike as is described below as it wound along the river and there were sharp incline and declines with breathtaking views of the river.  Really a great hike.  The only drawback was the constant sound of I-35.  I would have ranked some of the difficulty higher but didn't want to skew the rating away from the east directional hike that wraps around the city park.  This hike was foot only and only for the steady footed hiker in some places.  Made me think of Hobits!  I will return!

Hiked from Pickett along South Side (was hard to follow directions from here) and crossed to San Gabriel Park and walked around it and then along the north side (to the west) and crossed over on South Austin back to the car.  Someday will return on bikes to finish the path.

I chose to get off the beaten path and found myself climbing along the side of a cliff along the river.  I discovered the coolest site.  There was a very old, rusted pick-up truck in the river and a huge tree grew right through it.  It was pretty awesome.

Great for biking too!

OK - so we biked it this time but we have walked it plenty of other times!  This is a great trail for families.  We can take our kids out and do any section of it and make it as long or as short as we want it to be.

I have walked it from the Overlook Park all the way to San Gabriel and back and biked it as well.  There are always plenty of walkers and bikers and there are plenty of places to stop along the way.  I think this rivals the Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike trail!!

Great hike!

My 10 and 7 year old daughters and I biked this (the 7 year old has a one speed and did fine - she is a fairly athletic soccer player though).

The scenery was pretty and the river has been made more interesting by the past summer's flooding. The trail is excellent, although there were some spots where my 7 year old had to get off and walk her bike.

We saw a herd of deer and made it all the way to the top of the dam at Lake Georgetown. It gave the girls a great feeling of acomplishment. The downhill ride back takes about half the time going out.

We biked this after New Year's 2008.  I have two girls and the seven-year-old has a one-speed: she did great (she is a soccer player and kind of a tom boy).

The scenery was great and we made it from the 'trail head' at San Gabriel park all the way to the dam at Lake Georgetown.

Cool stuff and we still haven't found the dinosaur tracks that we've heard about.

I was surprised to find such a nice park in Georgetown. I started in San Gabriel Park and hiked the North San Gabriel Trail. There were several people in the park, playing games, and fishing, but not as many on the trail. I went west on the trail, until it met a road, near the Georgetown Country Club. The whole trail was paved in concrete, and very well maintained. Most of it looked very new. It crosses over the San Gabriel River 4 times, and leads you through a lot of trees, and past a couple parks. I really enjoyed this trail.

On a misty & rainy Sunday, this was a great choice. The 'living/walking' museum was a nice touch although some of the markers needed replacing. An easy walk with great scenery.

We hiked in 3 miles and back three we loved the secret falls under the crocket gardens. it was nice to hike in the woods and then have lookouts at the Georgetown lake from time to time.

We hiked the concrete path from San Gabriel Park westward. The river was okay for being in a city. Cliffs were nice distraction.

Now over 5 miles long, from Georgetown City park to Lake G'town dam. A slight detour through suburbia, though. Other than that, very nice quiet scenic trail.

This trail is in the process of being extended. It's not complete yet, but eventually will run all the way from SanGabriel Park to Lake Georgetown. There is some spectacular scenery that will be included when the trail is complete.
